High all,
I'm off to the US on Sunday, I'll be stuck in Silicon Valley for three weeks. I don't suppose any of you blokes live over that way, but if you do it'd be great to have a shop tour or a couple beers.
Oh, and I'll be spending a weekend visiting my best mate who lives down in San Antonio in Texas, so if any of you fellas live down there we could catch up for a beer or two as well.
Off to the US again
Obviously the Blokes and Fellas reference includes you Lillian, perhaps I could have phrased that a little better and said mates instead, no offence intended, didn't mean to exclude you.
Turns out that John How is also stuck in a hotel in Mountain View CA for the next two weeks, we might catch up for a few beers at some point, at least talk guitars.

Paul buddy if you get a chance to get into the city, SF, check out Sam Wah's a fantastic Chinese restaurant just off Union Square in China Town. Sam Wah's is the real deal with none of the glitz that the tourists fall for.
The food is the best that I have ever had and the atmosphere, well the atmosphere is unlike any other..... The building is 3 stories high and 12 feet wide.....
Seriously. You enter in the kitchen and people are running around with dead ducks and what not strewn all over the place. you would think at once that it should be condemned but wait - there's more....
After going up a narrow stairway to the 2nd, or 3rd floor depending on how busy they are you sit down at any of the tables that are adorned with carvings of other previous diners. Be prepared to learn way more about the sex lives of SF folks then you ever wanted to know when reading the tables......
The help is famous for being rude as hell to you and don't be surprised if after you order the wait person steps over to the dumb waiter and yells down it something like "hey - this asshole wants wonton soup and some of the rotting egg rolls..."
But the food is the best, very safe to eat, super cheap, no tourists there usually but a well known hang-out for college students.
Sam Wah's was featured in some of the Clint Eastwood movies too for it's rather, well rather unusual appearance and atmosphere.
And if all of this value is not enough the entire inside of the building has an exoskeleton of steel beams and struts keeping it standing during earth quakes and resulting from some previous damage to the place....
I used to stay in the Residence Inn in Sunnyvale and another favorite thing of mine to do in the valley is to head directly west into the mountains. Check out a map and find "Alpine Road." It is an old logging road and rarely traveled but it is on the maps. At times the road narrows to one lane but that is OK since there is never anyone stupid enough to be on it but me....
You will cross old wooden bridges and may get stopped by rangers who will want to feel the brakes on your rental car. Brakes heat up big time in the mountains and they are just trying to keep you safe. When you see the sign for memorial grove park anywhere you can and get out and walk around. You will be in the midst of some of the tallest trees, Redwoods, in North America. Some of the trees are over 300 feet and over 2 lanes wide. No one else goes there and the ground is littered with 6", yellow banana slugs which are harmless.
The quiet is amazing and I have spent hours up there just thinking about life.
Good luck and have fun.
