Help with a music style

Post by joel » Mon Sep 08, 2008 9:45 pm

After listening to Dave Whites "Loose Botany Bay", I've fallen in love with that style of guitar playing and want to hear more (and hopefully learn to play like it too). I'm posting here because I didn't want to hijack Daves thread and divert attention from that beatiful guitar.

So, can anyone tell me the names of some artists that play in that style? It's completely different from the other types of music I listen to so I don't know anything in this genre.

Hi Joel,

Basically its just playing with a pick and mixing chordal voicing with melody. Playing 4 course instruments - either single or doubled - like a tenor guitar. bouzouki, mandolin, mandocello etc makes this easier as there are less strings to get in the way. Also with modal tunings like GDAD you get a lot of support from the open strings so you can hit them in ones or twos while playing melody runs and it usually sounds fine. If not you just do some quick mutings.

As to artists to listen to - well you have Andy Irvine who now lives in Oz, together with your very own James Fagan (Nancy Kerr & James Fagan). Then thre are guitarists like Paul Brady and Richard Thompson who do stuff like this. I'll try and think of some more.
