new Flamenco

Post by martintaylor » Wed Jan 15, 2020 9:36 pm

Here's my Flamenco Blanca. Macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress) back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, 5 fan bracing with small closing braces, Australian Red Cedar neck, Rosewood fretboard and bridge, Planetary pegs, Rosewood bindings, ridiculously brittle purflings and rosette (with some pink abalone). Total weight 1091gm. Finishes with Shellac (still to add a few more coats I think but I do like the satin look)

Hi Martin,

Very nice!
A couple of questions, if I may:
What is the heastock overlay?
Where did you get the Australian Red Cedar for the neck? How do you like Aust Red Cedar? (I love it!)

Thanks,
GregL.

Hi Sebastian, yes they are! I'm not fully sold on them yet. I may go back to standard friction pegs.

Boutique Timbers in Rollands Plains NSW supplied the cedar https://goo.gl/maps/dUCfzYroGgXnT7CG8. I love using Australian Red Cedar for necks but must say the old growth stuff is the best. Some of the new growth timber from Nth QLD is a little soft for my liking but the older cedar is both darker in colour and a little stiffer while still remaining nice and light for the Flamenco.

Well, I inlaid it, does that count? The strips were bought at the last Timber & Working with Wood Show in Sydney. They are very thin and fragile so they were challenging to use, they were also not long enough so I had to join them in several places.
