My New Workhorse

Post by Tod Gilding » Wed Oct 31, 2012 2:32 pm

I hadn’t intended to post this one, but it could be of interest to someone building from Trevors Books.

This Guitar was meant to be a replacement for what I call my workhorse guitar, the requirements were, to be able to be gigged through a PA and or played acoustically at a Jam and hold its own, I also wanted it to be unadorned and plain to a certain extent and just let its tone and playability do the talking, it had to be very playable and sturdy enough to handle being carted all over the place.

Thanks To Trevor and Gerard and their books, it has fulfilled those requirements perfectly.
Also Thanks To John The WoodRat for his advice and that fantastic example of Oz Red Cedar on the back :)

Soundboard: Lutz Spruce finished thickness 2.8mm
Back and sides: Australian Red Cedar
Neck: african mahogany, plantation grown in QLD
Bridge and bound fingerboard, back and front head plate: ei rosewood
Binding and tail graft: ei Rosewood
French polished finish
Machines: Gold Gotoh SG360-0
Electronics: Fishman Presys plus UST
Falcate Braced (Sitka Spruce) 8mm
Live back and mass side blocks (No Added Side Mass)
Bridge Rotation 1.91 degrees (5mm variation)
T (1, 1)1 90 T (1, 1)2 160 T (1, 1)3 211

Looks like a keeper, Tod. I don't understand all the numbers, but if it sounds the goods, then it IS the goods. Nice work....

Well Done Tod....Tod brought it down here on Monday and it sounds really lovely....Kudos too for taking on the Falcate bracing and succeeding!

...When I saw it I had a touch of sellers regret as he got the cedar from me...you rarely see figure like that in cedar.

Did you get a monopole mobility figure for it?

Thankyou Steve, Nick, Matt, John and Trevor.

John, You can’t have your Figured Cedar back Sorry

Trevor “Powerful “would be a fair description, but there is also a lot more going on with this one that I don’t yet fully understand ,but I am hearing it, to sit and play this can also be mesmerising .
The monopole mobility is where I am at with it at the moment, trying to get my thick head around it all, I’m sure I will have no problem measuring the deflection, but the math involved in calculating the soundboard mass and then the monopole mobility will take me a little while me thinks. :?
