Custom Build – Daniel Hoban K5 “Otway Mill”

Firstly, I’d like to acknowledge the help and advice I received from several ANZLF members, but especially Bob Connor, which eventually led to this build. Some of you might recognize the story behind it.

On October 22, 1918, my grandfather was thrown from his horse and crushed by a runaway timber jinker and several tons of logs, at his sawmill at Stalker in Victoria’s Otway Ranges.
94 years and 1 day later, on October 23, 2012, I took delivery of a very special custom-made guitar featuring figured Australian Blackwood milled by my grandfather, made into a tray and passed down through the family over nearly a century.
The guitar was built by talented young Melbourne luthier Daniel Hoban, largely from Otway Ranges timber (Blackwood and Satinbox) from the same district as grandfather’s mill.
The theme of the “Otway Mill” is carried by all the decorative features, being made from grandfather’s Blackwood (rosette in the form of a circular saw, head-plate, heel-cap and tail-graft). The fretboard continues the theme, with Otway Mill inlaid in gold MOP.

Here are the specifications:
Daniel Hoban Steel string guitar K5 model
Otways Blackwood master grade back and sides
European Spruce soundboard
African Mahogany neck
Satinbox laminates, purflings, etc
Ebony fretboard best grade
Brazilian Rosewood bridge
Bindings Blackwood from B&S offcut
Gold MOP shell for inlays and side markers
Stainless steel truss rod
Adirondack Spruce bracing
Bone nut and saddle
Ebony bridge pins and endpin
Evo gold fretwire
Gold schaller M6 tuners with Ebony buttons
Durobond gloss nitro-cellulose lacquer finish

And here is a photo of the saw that cut up that Blackwood timber around 100 years ago – the sawbench at the Robins mill at Stalker.

Sound
The sound is everything I wanted in terms of piano-like clarity and richness. However, it has only been strung up for 3 days, so a sound clip will have to wait till I can find a better guitarist than me to record something worth listening to.
I have also written a song “The Otway Mill”, which tells the story of the mill and my grandfather’s fatal accident in 1918.
My thanks go to Daniel for interpreting my wishes and delivering such a beautifully crafted guitar.
I would welcome any feedback from ANZLFers! Hopefully this post shows the pictures OK – this post is a learning curve!

Yeh it's a good story Ed, great history on some really beautiful blackwood and a lovely guitar that came out of it.
Nick, I had to right click on where the image should be and open it in a new window. If you give that a try it should work.

Thanks, Nick. That's not working for me, so I have sent a note to the moderators for some help. Ed

Hi Ed, I just replied to your PM and have since had a look at the images and the code looks fine. I'm thinking there is something in your flickr.com acc settings that is preventing the forum software from downloading them so they will display in the browser. If you can't find anything in your flickr settings then uploading the images direct to the forum server as suggested in the later part of my PM will be a sure cure.

Give it a go and if your still having problems then let me know and I will download them from Flickr.com myself and then upload to the forum for you.

It's easy enough, here's and example:

You may want to have a look at this flickr.com link Ed

http://www.flickr.com/help/photos/#2265887
Where is the HTML code and photo file link?

The HTML code to embed a photo in a web page that you used to find on the All Sizes page is now only in the Share menu above the photo, to the right of the Actions menu. We now also include BBCode! (standard message board code)

There are a few cases where the code may not be available: 1) If the photo is restricted. 2) If that person has turned off "Share this" or access to original files.

The direct link to a photo file is no longer shown on the page. Per the Flickr Community Guidelines "pages on other websites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr." Linking directly to the photo file doesn't do this.

OK so that works..Minus the brackets which I removed to prevent the image from actually displaying directly from text as intended, here is the text in the link I grabbed as per flickr.com instructions
You could paste that text directly into your post from the flickr.com site and it will work just fine, but for interest I copied and pasted the following red bit into the forum edit window, http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8046/8115 ... f043_b.jpg and then clicked the (Img) button and bingo..it works also.

Cheers

Thanks, Kim, trying direct method now.
Preview looks OK, although in reverse order, but that doesn't matter. Here goes! Ed

It works. Direct is best! Ed.

Beautiful heirloom you have there Ed. As others have mentioned, the timbers are superb, and I really love the way the neck laminations show at the sides of the heel-really organic sort of flow to it.

You must be very happy with the detail using your Grandfather's blackwood-it's come out so elegant.

Cheers,
Brian

Hi, everyone.
Haven't managed to get a good guitarist to record a sound clip yet, so have had a go myself.
It's basic playing (errors and all) and basic recording with paired Shure SM57 and Sennheiser e840 through CuBase CI2+. Hopefully you still get a good take on the lovely sound of the guitar.

Any comments welcome! Ed.

Gorgeous sound Ed. And I don't think you need to find someone else to show off the guitar's sound, your playing was beautiful.

Well, that's one good sounding guitar, and I'm with Brian: very nicely performed, you should not hide your player's skills Ed! Thanks for posting the sound clip. :D
