Weissenborn Copy #5

Here is a weissenborn copy guitar finished a month ago. I have experimented with the bracing on this one like all the others and I'm happy with the tone. This one is all Australian Blackwood from Steve at Dorrigo Tonewoods. The appointments are Indian Rosewood from Shane at HighMountain Tonewoods and it has a K&K Mini Western pickup system fitted.

That is a very sweet and clean looking guitar. Gorgeous blackwood and just the right amount of understated decoration. Love it!
That non-gloss finish is really effective on the blackwood - what did you use?

Thanks Mark. The finish is hand rubbed shellac with three applications of thru-oil and hand polished with some steel wool. It was just an experiment with the tru-oil and I must say myself, it looks good. I like the flat, matt finish on my musical instruments. I reckon it gives them an earthy look.

I agree - it is a great look. Tru-oil is pretty user-friendly too. Did you fill the pores first?

Yes I used two applications of pumice power, metholated spirits and shellac and from memory it had four, four hours sessions of french polish. One session I usually get around the guitar four times and then level with some 6oo grit sandpaper the next day. What I like about this style of finish is the french polish gives a hardness to the finish once dry and the tru-oil can be applied every twelve months or so and it will always look good.

Nice Earthy look to it Alan. What"s it sound like compared to your others?
From the 3 Blackwood topped Weissy's I've made I reckon they'll take a solid couple of years of playing to get them to open up.

Thanks Bob. Yes I agree that the blackwood topped guitars do take a while to fully open up. This one has 8 x 11mm bracing all over except the transverse brace which is a big mother. The tone is good but not as good as the two previous all blackwood weissenborns which had 9 x 9mm englemann bracing.
