Jigs #3 to #5

Post by Taffy Evans » Sat Oct 28, 2023 9:44 am

Hi, I thought I would post 3 simple shop-built jigs this time, I hope you find them interesting.
#3 speeded up the time and the ease of cutting frets to size prior to fitting.
#4 repurposes an old belt sander for putting a radius on my bridge bases.
#5 is the way I glue up my fingerboards.

Hi, Why did I not think of this earlier? Works well, especially on a refret as it saves me working over the top of the body of the guitar to measure the frets. And the frets stay where they are, in the jig, until they are all ready to be collected up and moved to the fret holder.

I have a number of these belt sanders [collected over the years] so I could afford to reshape the sole plate under the belt of one of them, making a dedicated tool to give the required radius so that bridge base suits the top radius.

The job did not really worry me until I started cutting up multiple bridges, and I do a fair number of bridge replacements that need reshaping, it saves a lot of time then.

I sanded a piece of ply in the photo to show the timber removed, not shown is the block that fits onto the bridge to give a better grip whilst sanding.

Hi all, this is the fingerboard-to-neck gluing aid I have been using for many years, thought I’d show it.

The pics will tell the story. I find it puts even pressure/contact across the width of the fingerboard when gluing up. Works fine for me and conforms to any radius. If the fingerboard is already fretted, I have a thin aluminum spacer that I can place between the frets and the jig to prevent the frets from denting the jig.

If needed an extra spacer can added to the middle of the jig, to apply pressure to the center of the fingerboard if needed.
