Just a quick heads-up to any folk thinking of making up this vise.
Mitre 10 currently have these Irwin clamps on special . 2 clamps for $29.95.

Makes the guitar holder very affordable
As said previously , you want the model with a 305 mm. jaw opening . I notice Stanley have a good looking version also

G'day Lillian,
I take it you mean the two strips of carpet that hook over the upright part of the bench board.
I bent them tightly making a crease which formed the hook. Actually I think I remember hammering the crease. To make sure the hook stays permanent ,I applied some P.V.A. to the reverse (weave side ) of the carpet strips and had something hold that shape ( a loose clamp ).Let the P.V.A. set overnight and the hook becomes permanent.
I don't know if I made it clear , but these hooked strips of carpet just hang off the board so they are able to be moved to suit what ever width you have the vise set at. The thickness of the carpet strips is just right for the radius of the instrument so that the vise grips the edge ( sides ) and not put pressure on the back or top plates.
It works incredibly well and suitable for all sorts of instruments. Howzabout a pic. when your finished Lillian ?
