Short scale steel string - 2nd guitar

Post by Bob_H » Fri Jan 27, 2023 3:20 pm

I have reached the point of setting aside my latest project, my second guitar, to let the finish harden a little before attaching bridge and final set up. It has a 23.5 inch scale length, 14 fret to the body in Blackwood and Engelmann Spruce, with v bracing. Is is based on the Taylor GS Mini. Timber from Tasmanian Acoustic Tonewood, Australian Tonewoods and Jellyshake. finish is hardened shellac.

Nice work from The Barossa Valley :)

Must make the effort to get up your way for a visit sometime.

Ditto if you're in the hills.

Nice work Bob. Your second guitar, but I see that you have wood stacked up there for quite a few more! You and Martin are the SA wood hoarders. That mini looks very sweet. What is the fingerboard timber?

I am also interested to know what you thought of the Taylor style V-bracing. I think this is the first build I have seen where someone tried it.

Great result. I like The blackwood back and sides plus the finish.

Thanks Mark. The V-bracing is pretty easy to work with, but we will have to wait to see what the guitar sounds like. It's the first time I have used it. I am very happy with the Blackwood, which came from Tasmanian Acoustic Tonewoods.

The fingerboard, and the bridge (not shown) are, if I recall correctly, Doral / Native Olive from Australian Tonewoods.

Lovely little instrument there Bob. The finish looks really good in the pic too. I'm hanging out to hear your v brace thoughts once you get strings on it. I saw a builder post a v brace build on another forum but it unfortunately got hijacked by armchair IP and legal arguments before getting shut down by the mods, so never actually heard the makes thoughts.

I have finished up and strung up with some D'Addario Phosphor Bronze EJ17 (13-56). I am pleased with the action and the sound - it does present as pretty bright and forward, but not unpleasantly so. It is a very comfortable size for playing (based on Taylor GS Mini). I will try to make up some sound samples, although they will inevitably be compromised by my recording and playing technique.
