Miratone 3220 source

Post by shane77 » Thu Oct 27, 2022 4:36 pm

Hi there-
As my old tin of Durabond seems well passed it's shelf life, I would like to try out Miratone 3220 as an alternative. Does anyone know of a source for smaller quantities than the 4 litres tins? I only build at 'hobby' speed... and I don't want to buy 12 litres (3220+thinner+slow thinner) if possible...as I don't know how long it will take me to get through 8 guitars! I've heard the lacquer only has a 2 year shelf life.
I'm based in Sydney. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

My understanding is that the lacquer from 'Mirotone', Yennora NSW, https://mirotone.com/, is only sold in the larger size containers.

Another option is 'Mohawk' that can be purchased in quart size and one gallon size from:

Guitaraust Vic, https://www.guitaraust.com.au/finishing/lacquers.html

Australian Luthier Supplies Qld, https://luthiersupplies.com.au/

The cost for the imported 'Mohawk' is high, however, for the one or two guitar builds in a year this may still be an acceptable option.

You may be able to find a shop that breaks down to 1 litre sizes. My supplier in Cairns for all Mirotone products does this and has them on the shlef.

I had look at Mirotone's website re: 3220 data sheet:

Shelf life 36 months

Comes in 4 litre and 20 litre sizes

Thanks for the replies. 36mths... I thought it was only 24 months so that's a bit better!
I'll try local suppliers as well to see if anyone sells smaller quantities. I know the Mohawk stuff, but as you've said it's not cheap at $75/litre.
Cheers
