Carving necks on the spindle moulder

Just saw this on the web:



Any ideas on how to work out the shape of the mdf template that goes at either end? It rubs against the frame. It seems to me to be an enlarged version of the shape you want the neck to be at either end, but I can't work out how you'd size it.

Anything like this appeared in the lutherie mags over the years?

There are a few plans out there from memory, the cams on the ends are typically just a projection of desired end shape. Those ones in the picture would be some similiar calculation upscaled, interestingly they are using a spindle moulder so thatmay be why itsall upscaled size wise, most people have small table router setupsso have small cams

I know a guy in the states that was years back looking at making a commercial version of these available with aluminium cams etc, will send him an email and ask where hes at

You could run it off a bottom bearing or the table slot. Looking at this video I think the feller runs it off the sliding table:

I bought a spindle moulder on the cheap the other day, now I have to find things to do with it. I've a spiral head coming soon from the UK and a couple of tenoning heads to cut the neck joint in one pass. Should be fun.

Beauty of a jig like that, it allows you to run a few profiles which are customizable, down side of those router bits you see for shaping necks from stewmac etc is that its one shape.

If you go down the path of making a jig, yell out and make two , I will happily buy one from you.

It'll be the spindle moulder jig I'll be making. You're best off with a spiral head cutter for that sort of cut. Cheaper from the UK than here.

Only got a Facebook link, I'll post a proper video when I've remade the jig. But it works! Stick around to the end, you'll see the neck, straight off the machine with about 5 seconds of sanding with 180 grit.

No slots at all Steve? However you do it, you wouldn't want to raise the axis of the jigs' rotating part. It would take the neck too high over the cutter. You could run it like a big bench hook - that is how I cut the tenon on the spindle. But if you did that you'd need a different set up for the stops.

Good idea, i could extend the ends over like a hook on the flat top

This is my one, purchased it about 10 years ago, done maybe 100hrs of work on it, so its just barely broken in.
