Back brace/linings jigs

Post by nkforster » Mon Aug 26, 2019 9:53 pm

Anyone out there got a good jig for notching linings for fitting braces? I'm set up so my braces are in the same spot each time but I've never made the next step - a jig for routing the linings to fit each time.

Anyone out there made one?

Hi Nigel,
Sure, here's my jig -

.
Works a treat, takes about 5mins to do 6 notches.

In all seriousness, i do remember seeing someone who had made a router jig (they made a video about the jig, and demonstration of use on Youtube). I've tryed to find it just now with no luck.
I thought it was Beau Hannam....

Thought about making up a jig on a few occasions but by the time I'd finished thinking about it I had the slots all cut by hand :)

Maybe it's just me but cutting brace slots is a job I prefer doing by hand with a saw and a chisel...

A lot of makers over here in Germany do it with routers, but this way of course you can not do sharp inside corners everywhere. On hard laminated linings I use with success one of those oscillating tools with a narrow blade.

I must admit I quite enjoy hand cutting notches. I have to force myself to stop after the first one while demo'ing it to students.

I did see a T shaped jig on (I think) ig a while ago. The stem of the T was 2 parts and slipped over the guitar sides with the cross of the T creating a platform for a dremel to run along.
