Okay Ive got a French Polish job here thats turning nasty on me. The shellac surface has a few minute breaks appearing in it. Its not an issue with shellac or the oil itself..both have been changed. The most likely culprit is some olive oil that has somehow gotten into the rosewood pores..possibly during sanding back (might have got to bare wood in a few places).
Ive removed the shellac and sanded back the wood and now I want to clean out any residual oil from rosewood pores. The OLFers reccomend naptha for this. Anyone know where Id get some here in Australia (preferably Adelaide).
TIA Martin

G'day Martin, Next time leave the oil out altogether. I don't use any when french polishing . It may take a bit longer , but you'll have less problems . If you do use it , you have to really ensure you raise it all to the surface with alchohol sessions and wipe it off with a soft cloth. If it is left in , it will cause cracking , and later on , the finish will turn very dark. I've seen some American pianos turn black, like tar. It's quite common.
