Wood Identification

Post by MattW » Tue Feb 20, 2018 9:11 pm

Hoping for some help to identify what this wood might be. I’ve reclaimed it and used it to make a ukulele neck. I’m pretty sure it’s softwood, but not which one .

The density I’ve measured at 475kg/m3. It smells very nice, a combination of cedar, camphor, and some spiciness like cinnamon/clove/sandalwood ( i know this sounds like I’m a cork sniffer but it really smells nice :) ). The smell was very strong after planning it a few weeks back, and it’s still very noticeable. I have an unfinished piece of Huon pine cross-cut into a cheese board which is much denser, different smell and a lot waxier so i doubt its huon pine.

The piece I have is very dry and stable, and is on about 70% quarter. There are medullery rays in the neck where it's on quarter, but i haven't got a photo:(. The large piece is the board I cut it from, and the small piece is the sanded off-cut from the neck. The knot in it looks like any pine knot.

I have enough to make a few more necks so would be nice to know what it is? Sorry the photos aren't great.
