New Build Bridge Lift

Post by ozziebluesman » Thu Nov 24, 2016 11:23 am

Hello to you all,
I have an issue with a bridge lifting after twenty four hours on a new 018 acoustic guitar build.
This is one of my student builds and this has never happened to any of my builds.
The student did his own French Polish and we masked the bridge footprint off with Stew Mac sticky tape as I usually do.
I don't use oil in my French Polish process but Greg used olive oil in his process.
The guitar bridge was glued using tite bond original and humidity level was good.
My guess is that oil has seeped through the tape and the glue has not had a dry surface to adhere to.
Top is Lutz bridge Blackwood.
I would like some views and advice on what to do to get the top gluing surface prepared for gluing again?
Here are two pics and I look forward to some advice from you all.
Cheers
Alan

To me, it appears the surface was contaminated.

Thanks Steve.
How would you go about preparing the top surface for the re-glue?
This has never happened before so I need some experienced advice.
Cheers

Clearly remove the bridge, mask it off and flat sand, then follow up with some alcohol (meth spirits) cleaning of the surface.

The base of the bridge no longer appears flat, so reshape that as well.

I would also drag a razor blade around the border of the bridge, so that way, some of his french polished surface actually just goes under the edge. Gives a flawless finish IMO.

My check when making sure the surface is clean enough to be glued onto, is just pour some water on.
If it absorbs the water it will absorb the glue.
