White spirit cleaner

Post by rocket » Wed Sep 21, 2016 3:15 pm

I have some adhesive residue left on the binding after removing the masking tape and I'm just a little concerned if I use the white spirits to help remove it will the be any adverse effect when applying the pre cat lacquer.
Any advice?

Cheers. Rod.

Shellite shouldn't be an issue......I use it for cleaning up wood surface prior to finishing.

Shellite is naptha....it will flash off and shouldn't leave a residue of any sort. I sometimes use it to clear oil that's bled out during French Polishing sessions.

Diggers "white spirit" is a different product to their Shellite, more akin to dry cleaning fluid.
Probably ok for this application but may not be finish safe on lacquer/shellac like the shellite/naptha

The white spirit seems a bit "oily" to me...I only use it for cleaning chisels etc.

Shellite should be available at Bunnings...I get it from my local Mitre 10. Diggers brand.

I dont want to seem like im stating the obvious, But im abit confused as to why the big effort. Surely the residue would come off during the scrapeing & sanding process?

It's often alot quicker cleaning off the residue with Shellite. Some tapes leave a residue that doesn't sand off that easily and during the sanding process the goo gets dragged around and gums up the paper. Some double sided tapes are really bad for this.

That's what I use the diggers shellite.
It gets confusing with different names used in different countries

Potentially disastrous results if you put the wrong stuff in your stove.

ohh I see, makes sense thanks. I've never experienced a problem, I just go nuts with a scraper taking any tape left behind and glue squeeze out off with it.
