Spots under glue - Myrtle

Post by Steve.Toscano » Mon Sep 19, 2016 11:41 pm

Joined a back Tonight and upon removing from the jig I noticed these spots under the glue.
Looks like mold, has a slight green tinge to it which the camera doesn't show very well. Was only in the jig for ~2hours, seems super quick for mold to form.
Environment at the time was dry, around 40% humidity.

Wood is flamed tassie myrtle.
Glue is titebond 1.

Anyone come across this before? Shed any light on whether in fact it is mold or something else? A reaction with the glue maybe?

Could these spots be small fungus areas as in Tiger Myrtle?
Tiger Myrtle as opposed to Red Myrtle is, as I believe, is an older Red Myrtle tree with fungus, this could have been on the verge before being felled and milled.

Cheers,

Alan

If it's the moisture in the glue bringing it out it begs the question what spraying a finish will do.

Might want to grab some offcuts and see if you can replicate and problem solve.

Is the timber from a real supplier (like Pete) or from one of those "eBay" suppliers that sell wet firewood under the description of tonewood?

Steve,

if you apply some creativity and strategic placement you may be able to make some Tiger Myrtle 8)
