Curly timbers on eBay

Post by curly » Wed Jul 13, 2016 8:59 pm

G'day all ,
The last little while I've been puddling around listing a bit of stock on eBay . I didn't go in with the highest of expectations to be sure but it would appear to be working . So far .
I'm listing all manner of timbers but the focus will be on rare , figured and luthierie related primarily . If it keeps working I'll go to an eBay store and list the whole run of componentry for guitars , see how we go . ....
Someone who knew how to use a computer would provide a link . Alas I'm a dumbass on that front . Anyways my user name there is curlypete1 . Just pop that into their search and you will find me .
I'm open to any requests for listings , I've got mountains of stock ! Because I'm a saw miller , not a dealer , I should be able to better most of the regular sellers on price .

Thanks to Bob for permission to spruik the wares .

I just had a look at your eBay site. The ringed gidgee back and sides set looks interesting...I am wondering if Trevor Gore could chime in, having used this timber recently, regarding how easy or tricky it was to bend the sides, and as to what thickness the sides ended up? Just curious...I am also interested in the tonal implications of this timber...I have just got through the fantasy of visualising an archtop made with ringed gidgee B&S! Ha ha, if one could find a nice enough piece for a carved back..might be an extremely rare guitar!

To be sure I've got awesome bookmatched ringed Gidgee inch boards . It's power carvers and files / rifflers to shape it down though , chisels are near on to completely useless against Gidg . Metal work tools work it beautifully!

How do scrapers and planes go?

forget about planes and scrapers. Although planes will work well on the straight grained material, the curly stuff tears under both planes and scrapers. So it's sanding only, but it does sand well.

If you've got good, hard chisels that will hold and edge, it will chisel OK.

Bending has to be done very hot. It will tend to facet on the curly parts, which is effectively end grain coming through the surface. So all in all, one of the most difficult timbers to work. Density is huge, ~1300kg/m^3, so it's never going to make a light weight guitar. The ones that I've made have sounded really good, though.

I've just finished a OO Florentine cutaway with Gidgee and the finished guitar produced the best sounding instrument so far...very clear and bright. I was so impressed with the results I've just purchased another Gidgee set from Pete.
