Show us your End Grafts

Post by Bob Connor » Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:30 pm

I got this idea after responding to a post on the OLF about setting up a gallery of End Grafts or Rosettes or whatever.

If you can all throw your pics of various End Grafts (I am hesitant to us the words Butt Wedge, fearing an onslaught from Billy and Hesh :D ) into this thread I'll move it into the Tutorial section eventually so there'll be a permanent resource for those seeking inspiration.

I did a quick search on the OLF and came up with the following.

I've started putting names to the end grafts. I'll get through them all eventually.

Impressive lineup, Bob!
Here's one that is recent. Indian rosewood body, Kingwood bindings and end graft as you so judiciously call it.

That's a pretty crappy photo of mine, I've got to start taking photography lessons  I'll post a few more crappy pics of others of mine over the next couple of days.

My philosophy on end grafts is that I like them straight and as wide as the bindings. I cut the rebate in the body by hand with a sharp knife against a rule. If I stuff up the first time it gives me room to do it over with a narrow wedge. Or a wider wedge if I stuff it up again. There, so my secrets out, if you ever see a guitar of mine with an extra wide wedge - you'll know I was having a bad day.

Now, that's not to say that I don't like wide wedges, I just like to give myself room for error. Wide wedges, or curved 'fancy pants' ones, are a one shot deal. Nubes beware.

Very nice Taffy, may be straight but mighty classy. Are you still building the top and back flat now days or do you now use a radius dish? And what kind of wood is that on the sides?

cheers

Kim

Thanks Kim
All guitars have been radiused since ol' #1 in back in 1976. No dishes back then this one is possible 89'- 90' have used dishes since then and experimented with different degrees of radius.

The sides are Indian Rosewood, I should show the rest of the guitar, it has good figure. I still have the last of that purchase still to use but after all these years it would be like parting with an old friend. But it's got to happen, but they will have to be real special guitars.

Heres a couple of photo's of a more recent guitar. Same batch of Rosewood as above but 15years later. Still pretty plain.
