K+K installation

Post by rocket » Thu Apr 07, 2016 7:01 pm

I've heard it said that installing K+K transducers is best done using superglue instead of the double sided tape that is supplied, so is medium ca ok or is the gel type absolutely necessary?

Cheers

I always use the Gel. So can't say whether medium would work.

I've used Hot Stuff medium CA and had no problems with it.

The gel will likely give you a bit more time to get them in the right place.

In my experience with K&K pickups it is important to experiment with the double sided tape for a while. I have found that the manufacturers recommended spots are not always the best sound-even on instruments of the same type.

Further to my comments...I have a gypsy jazz guitar that I installed some K&K pickups into a few years ago. There are two transducers, not three-it was the one recommended by K&K at the time. They now have an under bridge pickup that they make for these guitars-a complete change of direction. The recommended position for the pickups I have was to place each transducer underneath the "moustache tips". This gave a horrible harmonicy and clunky woody sound. I think on a better more mobile soundboard the top would not be as stiff in this area for a start...moving the transducers in towards each other and placing them almost directly under the bridge ends located the best spot tone wise. The reason I couldn't put the discs directly under the bridge ends is because there are braces in the way.I have the impression that these pickups are best for tops with high mobility, and don't perform nearly as well on overbuilt guitars where the sound they "hear" suffers from unwanted overtones and a lack of bass.
