Rice Bubble / Les Paul Style Guitar

Post by Kim Strode » Fri Jul 11, 2008 5:52 pm

My son Tom built this fully working guitar for a VCE Studio Arts Project (Year 12). As many from the forum have assisted us in making this guitar, I thought you might want to see the end result.

The body which houses the electronics is made of a timber box, with a laminated 'Rice Bubbles' pack wrapped around the inner box later. We purchased a pre-made Les Paul neck and Humbucker pick-ups from ebay. The machine heads are Grover 18:1 Sta-Tite. I think the guitar sounds great, but have no point of comparison.

Kim, I'm just stunned. That's so totally cool. And how do I put this? Thinking outside the box.... or should that be inside the box. Bloody brilliant. :cl :cl :cl

Very well thought out and executed, might see it in a TV add one day. Bo Diddley would proud of you's.

Nice concept build, Kim.

I wouldn't mind seeing another built out of rice bubbles and copious amounts of CA glue.
I'm guessing it'd be lightweight enough.

Way cool Kim.

You'll have to bring it down next time you're in Geelong.

I've got a few electrics and amps we can do some comparisons with.

Hey what a great concept. The look is sensational and very inovative. Top marks for that axe!

That is very cool. You know, they call them "Rice Krispies" here in the US. Wierd.

That really IS clever. Does that brand cereal come in different sized boxes? If so, you could build an entire family of instruments with the different sizes. The smallest (personal) size could make a uke, and on upward. If there is a larger size box than the one you've pictured, how about a bass, next?

It's funny you should mention that Steve. As a prototype to convince the teacher it could be done, Tom first made a Uke size instrument (complete with pick-up) out of a smaller size Rice Bubbles Box.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. Small minds run in the same rut, eh?
What first got me thinking about this was a concert at the GAL in 2006.
It was a serious affair, where the new Violin family of instruments (eight different fiddles, not the usual four) were being displayed. From wee small to incredibly huge, with more instruments inbetween to fill up more of the gaps. The concert was fantastic, by the way.

And there at the convention is Duane Heilman with his hilarious Spamolin, a dulcimer made from a Spam can. (Don't know what they call that mystery meat down under...) So we got to thinking about a Spamolin family of instruments, made from different sized cans, and well, you get the idea.

I like your uke. Why not get the giant economy-sized box and attempt a bass?

Probably the original viking instrument http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwy2MPT5RE

We know about Spam here, great idea BTW, there are other icon brands that would be amenable to a bit of punk lutherie. They are hard to get now but the original hard school suitcases come to mind.

...or superhero lunch boxes. (Or do you call them lunch pails?)

Funny video clip, thanks.
