What timber is this?

Post by Hank » Fri Dec 11, 2015 6:11 pm

Righto so I've inherited 3 sticks of this stuff 4.5 x 290 x 70
originally from some kind of boat, first thought was Kauri....... but unsure
Dosen't match the stick I've got in the workshop, which i thought was Kauri?

anyways ones nicely quartered the others are crown cut

I've machined and sanded a piece thrown some clear on and was hoping someone could
tell what it is

Cheers
Hank

Agreed , my first impression would be nz kauri . Too dark for qld kauri . The ' salt and pepper ' ray cells are right on . Maybe the late wood bands look a little heavy . The timbers of Agathis and Araucarias are mostly very similar . Hoop and even bunya can look very similar though the real honey gold looks like Agathis Australis to me . Podocarpus elatus ( plum pine ) has that colour but is a fair bit heavier than kauri . It is pretty rare but was used for boats .What's it weigh and what are the dimensions ? If you cube it out that's a help . I could look up the burning splinter test to see if there's any definitive answer there .

Thanks seeaxe and Pete

Yep, i'm thinking your both right NZ Kauri
The quartered works out at 545Kg M3, did a burning splinter test and the ash was black
Looks like i'll be using NZ Kauri tops for while

Cheers Guys and thanks again

Hi Hank

There's a museum a bit north of me that has a lot of kauri related artifacts, including a standing display of coopering using kauri staves to make barrels. This was a common use for kauri in NZ so I would not be surprised if it was used to make beer vats in the West Island.

The museum is Pioneer Museum at Matakohe if you feel like googling it.

Cheers

Well now I'm just stuck on the poetry of that .
With all the fancy new processes like torrefication I'll go with my timber being soaked in beer for 50 years any day . Who's to say , it may well match the player !
