neck laminate glue

Post by old_picker » Sat Jun 27, 2015 3:13 pm

epoxy or wood glue?
i have used titebond original in the past building necks and not had problems
hoping some one can chip in with some good reasons for me to change to an epoxy system

the one i am building currently is a set neck stacked laminate design of 3 sections and two veneers
i am wondering how the laminate glue joins would fare if the neck ever had to be steamed off

Epoxy or Titebond would be what I would use. Titebond a bit less messy and easier to clean up than epoxy. The laminated neck on my last classical was done with Titebond.

When steaming off a dovetail joined neck the heat and moisture are really only going to affect the area in the immediate vicinity of the mortise..I doubt the integrity of neck laminations would be an issue.

thanks martin - its not a dovetail but a long tenon + mortise join -
a reasonable size glue surface compared to a dovetail which apparently done properly requires glue only to hold it in position

Titebond for me as well.

I try and avoid epoxy as much as possible due to it's it's sensitising effects.

Titebond original is what I use for most things. I but it but the jug and pour it into the smaller, easier to work with bottle.

i laminate my two-piece double bass necks with hide glue. Invisible glue line and no issues.
