Melbourne Guitar Festival

Email from Rob Walker via Jack Spira:

"Hi everyone,
Apologies for another bulk email...
I wanted to make sure you're aware of the Melbourne guitar show coming up in a few months. This event is being run by the Australian Music association, and the organiser to contact if you're interested in taking part is Rob Walker, I'll copy his email below in case you didn't get it already.

As far as our show goes, we are still figuring out how to engage with this new show... Rob was hoping to make a hand made guitar section at his show, but that depends on enough guitar makers signing up. If there's not enough interest to do that, we are thinking that we (the guitar makers show) might hire a stand at the show to exhibit a couple of guiars and generally promote hand made instruments and publicise our show which will be a couple of months later. if that makes sense!

In any case, Rob is looking for interested people at the moment so I thought I'd send out a bulk email to make sure you're aware of it
cheers!
Jack

From Rob Walker....

Our association is pleased to extend an invitation to Victorian makers of guitars and amps to view details of the Melbourne Guitar Show to be held at the Caulfield Racecourse on August 8 & 9. I have attached an exhibitor’s proposal for your consideration, and extend a warm welcome to those we can assist in attending.

Numbers of local makers have approached me about the Show and I met with the Guild reps organising the Guitar Makers festival in October. I propose that the Melbourne Guitar Show is an additional opportunity for 2015 – and I will promote the Makers Festival later in the year.

I would be open to creating an area for Victorian makers if this could be coordinated. I have been talking to the Victorian Guild recently and would be happy to try and create an area that would prove affordable – perhaps each maker could have a trestle and share an area so that costs are affordable – or at least in line with your participation fees at the Guitar Makers Festival.

Alternatively you could take you own stand (which we offer at AMA members rates).

I would also welcome any seminars we could design on guitar making in particular, that promoted the art and your brands.

Given it’s been a decade since the last general Melbourne Guitar Show we believe the demand will be there. Interest in the guitar is high. Our show is starting to gain some momentum and we have a great line-up of our best players to present performances and seminars. Retailers are involved so there are selling opportunities. Guitar suppliers are also exhibiting as well as supporting their retailers. Patrons will be there to buy, as well as see a deep range of brands.

The association has an aim to run promotions to the end-user to heighten interest and increase sales.

Participation will afford good online coverage through the show’s portal and social media, as well as present to a large crowd of enthusiasts. We would also highlight the wealth of quality products made here in Victoria, and ask our PR people to target the mainstream media with this angle.

I intend to engage PBS FM, Beat, Mixdown Monthly, Guitar Gods and Masterpieces on Ch31, Australian Guitar magazine, as media partners. We have also engaged a PR firm to cover all media online and traditional.

Going by the numbers we have attracted to this event in the past, we believe we can attract 3 – 4,000 guitar enthusiasts.

I hope you regard this invitation as a genuine attempt to acknowledge the depth of our local makers and provide a consumer awareness building opportunity at a cost that is reasonable – we want to promote everything that is good about guitar playing and our local industry is something we’d be proud to have involved.

You can contact me on rob.walker@australianmusic.asn.au or by phone 0438564960.

Best wishes

Rob

An update from Jack:

Hi everyone, I hope you can forgive another bulk email.
The Melbourne guitar show in August have sent out an offer for luthiers and related businesses. You may have already received it directly from Rob Walker, but in case you didn't I'm sending it out to the guitar makers festival list.
cheers!

I’ve had discussions with numbers of guitar makers, amp builders and others including the Victorian group, about an area that showcases the locally made product, and one that is not cost prohibitive.

I am pleased to make a further offer to all makers regarding the Melbourne Guitar Show.

The response to the show has been enthusiastic, and with media campaign kicking in June 1, I want to ensure I have a full list of exhibitors to promote, so that we get maximum attendance possible.
I am estimating that 2 x businesses could share the equivalent of 3m x 2.5m

That would mean 1 x trestle each in that area, plus some floorspace.

The stand would have a solid back wall, from which guitars could be hung (suspended somehow from the top of the wall, and hung with straps or similar).

I am proposing that the contribution per exhibiting maker would be $295 inc GST

I am proposing that I would extend the floorplan as indicated on the attached floorplan – allocating Stand # 64, 65, 66 (and if demand warrants 67 – 69). I will continue contacting makers in the next few weeks to finally establish demand, but I’d expect a dozen or more makers would attend.

You will see on the plan (top-left) that there is a space which could be used for the ‘quiet room’ – if someone needs to hear a pin drop then potential customers can be escorted to the admin centre offices.

I will locate quieter sessions in the Seminar Space. I would hope we could have a panel on guitar making in that space.

I would appreciate if you would confirm your interest in participating by dropping me an email to rob.walker@australianmusic.asn.au or 0438 564 960.

PS. If any of your colleagues have not heard about us yet, please let them know they’re invited.

Regards

Rob
