1985 Takamine EN 20 Jumbo.

Post by Bazz » Fri Apr 10, 2015 8:44 pm

I am putting a new cedar top on a Takamine EN 20 Jumbo and would like to know what wood was used in bindings and rosette. Thanks for any help.

Looking at photos of the guitar it looks like the instrument has plastic bindings. Maybe it's just me but rosette looks suspiciously like a cheap arse decal rather than an inlay. Perhaps I'm missing something but didnt you note the bindings and rosette before you ripped off the old top?

I re-topped an EN10 may years ago that had split across the grain due to extreme run out. From memory the bindings and rosette were brown and cream plastic, so I retrieved and re fitted them. It's not as difficult as it sounds, the plastic peels off the wood fairly easily. Though I wouldn't be crazy enough to do it again! Why is this one being done?

Once a customer returned a guitar custom made for him with a totally smashed top saying he had put it down at a party and someone stood on it. I later heard from his mate that the girl friend found him in the embrace of another and used the guitar to deliver a headache.

I've re-topped one Takamine and it had cream coloured plastic bindings. The client wanted a wood rosette, so didn't worry about matching the original.
