Aussie Native timber like Mahogany?

Looking for a common native Aust timber that's similar to mahogany in weight, strength, etc. Planning a lightweight bass and I want to use it for the neck. Thoughts?

Yep. It's often hard to tell the difference when stacked together as well.

Aus has a lot of timbers related to the true Swietenia mahoganies . Anything in the family Meliaceae .
It's only a start because the family is quite diverse .
Aus Red cedar Toona citiala is probably the best know reliative , though really only suited to low string tension necks . The genus Dysoxylum has some really good mahogany alternatives with deep red colour and ease of working , like D muelleri - Miva mahogany ( smells like wee ) and D freserianum - Rose mahogany or Scented Rosewood ( smells lovely ) . Melia azedarch or White Cedar I reckon is about the perfect neck material though it finishes out more brown than red though it has lovely ray figure .
There are others like the Genus Owenia though these are heavier .
Beyond that I agree , good old growth Queensland Maple is hard to beat . I reckon there would be a tree or two down up there at the moment .....

I have everything labelled with Black Texta at the ends, when I've got boards of Qld Maple, African Mahogany, Fiji Mahogany, Honduran Mahogany all stashed together, it they weren't labelled I'd be stuffed telling what is what! I could guess and I'd possibly be right, but I couldn't guarantee I'd be right!
