Guitar Finish Ideas

Post by mickeyj4j » Wed Feb 11, 2015 5:38 pm

Hi I have a cheep Baritone Ukulele, Johnson JUK-20 with a painted finish. Recently I decided to personalise it with an image. I found a nice picture, traced it on and borrowed a friends Pokerwork (wood burning) machine to make it permanent. the results came up great.

Now all i need to do is work out what to finish it with to protect things.
I have some Linseed Rich Natural Wood Oil that I can use. But was thinking as the pokerwork has burnt grooves into the wood it may be better to apply some type of clear vanish.

what do you recommend I do. would it be ok to use the linseed oil by itself, apply the linseed oil first and then varnish or just varnish.

i think it would depend on what the original finish is atm.
most painted guitars have a clear coat over the paint.
if you go with the danish oil test it somewhere else first.
or you could try the drop fill idea that i saw in a post recently.
Hopefully some of the other more knowledgeable blokes on here mite add some input

Maybe an artist brush and apply wipe on poly to the artwork!

Well this looks like no clear coat over it.

I have still not found time to fix this but I have come across True-oil in this post Wipe-on finish for acoustic guitar I like the easy wipe on and off method so will get some. Should be perfect for my other project too DIY Cajon Drum

Thanks for all your help. I will upload pictures of the finished product.
