Mini dimensions

Post by 56nortondomy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 10:44 am

I've been asked to quote to build a mini ( Maton type ) guitar. I've got most of the dimensions i need. There's 2 i'm not sure about. 1 the width of the upper bout and 2 the measurement from the top of the guitar to the centre of the sound hole ( can't find these anywhere and there's no shop stocking them in my area ). Hope someone can help me out.
Thanks Wayne

Hi Wayne,

I don't have "official" measurements, but I just got a nearly face-on pic of the Maton Mini and scaled off known dimensions (page 5 of the Maton catalogue: http://maton.com.au/assets/pdf/Maton_Ca ... oustic.pdf) and got these numbers:

upper bout width = 231mm
top of body to centre of soundhole = 132mm (soundhole = 90mm)

You could do the same calcs with lots of pics and get your own measurements and check mine.

Thanks,
GregL.

Thanks Greg, i was thinking 130 mm for the s/h position so that's close to what you say. I was guessing 250 mm for the upper bout. I'll draw it up with the 231 mm and see what it looks like.
Thanks again Greg.

G'day Wayne,

I had a mini maton in the workshop for a setup and made a drawing of the guitars dimensions. Currently making one for my daughter.

From my measurements it's 130 mm from the 14th fret to the centre of the soundhole. Soundhole 90 mm and width at the neck block 90 mm and 94 mm at the butt.

If you need any further measurements just p email.

Cheers

Alan

Looks like you're joining the neck to the body at the 14th fret Al.

Dave and I just completed one and the spec that we used had the neck joining the body at the 15th fret (which is what Maton do)

I don't have the instrument here at the moment but I'll post a few of our dimensions when I get my hands on it.

I'm not saying that either way is wrong or right but a lot will depend on the scale length that you intend to use. Anything will work if you put a bit of thought into it.

Regards
Bob, Geelong

Thanks Alan and Bob. I'm using a 577.85 scale and joining at the 15th fret.
Thanks Wayne

Yes Bob mine is a 14 fret to the body and it depends on your scale length. I used a 25.5 " template and started at the third fret If I remember correctly.

Cheers

The original has a 22 3/4 scale length, which is what we used. Makes it pretty easy to bend strings on it.

Hi Greg
I am on hols with family in Goonellabah and saw a Mini in "Planet Music" in Lismore the other day if you want to inspect anything else on the real thing.
First time I have seen/played one - had the same urge as all the others in this post.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the info - Wayne, do you want me to check any measurements on a real Mini?

Frank - I live about 15 minutes drive from Goonellabah, you're welcome to drop in for a cuppa if you have any spare time on your holiday.

Thanks,
GregL.
