student update

Post by martintaylor » Sat Dec 13, 2014 10:59 pm

Hi All,

Well, I've been really busy this year with the starting up of the Australian Guitar Making School on the Central Coast. Don't worry, this isn't a plug just a proud teacher moment. Below is one of the first student guitars nearly finished.

Back and sides - Northern Silky Oak
Bindings - Jarrah
Neck - Brazilian Mahogany
Top - Engelmann Spruce

Zipflex (cheating? well at least it worked!)

Back and sides looking good so far.

Nice tight joins

Beautiful work. Will we get to see more student products in the near future?

Hi MIguel,

I'll post some more pics as they get a little closer. We have such a variety of guitars being built, from an 1834 Lacote classical through to a falcate braced, short scale acoustic Bass with wedged sides and pretty much everything in between.

Hi,
Nice build. Interested to know how the cut-a-way was bent, thickness, wet or dry bend etc. As I tried to bend some Brazilian Lacewood for a cut-a-way but was'nt sucessful. Any info appreciated.

Hi Wayne, the side did the cutaway was thinned down to 2mm then soaked for an hour before bending by hand on a bending iron set at 185 deg C. We've found that to be the best combination for the students.
