Binding depth

Post by Jeremy D » Mon Nov 17, 2014 8:56 am

Hi guys,

I just routed the ledges on my latest build and the binding ledge is a bee's dick too tall (not the depth of the ledge but the height). I am talking about .1 mm. Do you think with swelling, gluing and scraping etc I should be able to go ahead or should I source some binding that is a little taller? I am tempted to just go for it.

Glue some purfling to the bottom of the binding.

I'm assuming that the bindings don't already have purflings attached.

Regards

Thanks Bob,

I thought of doing that but I have already routed past the end graft which has a thin line of maple purf on each side. I guess it wont look to bad not being mitered.

I too would be looking at side purfling to make up the height, though if we are talking 0.1mm, scraping/sanding of the top and back as you prepare for finishing should take care this difference no worries.

+1 for purflings. If that doesn't work then whack in some higher bindings. If you cant get these commercially put out a call and someone here on the forum will probably have some or be able to cut you some.

Thanks guys I will check out how the purf will look. What type of glue is best for gluing purfling to binding? Titebond II?

0.1mm to feather the top and back into the binding would be bugger all, especially as the glue is going to swell everything up a bit. In many cases when we are giving the final voicing to the top we are taking off a bit around the lower bout anyway.

I use HHG to glue on all purflings. Never have a problem with it.

But that's my 2cents.

I use Titebond III...it's a bit more resistant to heat and moisture if youre into bending your bindings before installation.
