Melbourne Working with Wood Show - Big Sky Timber

Post by J.F. Custom » Wed Oct 22, 2014 10:22 pm

Hi all.

This thread is a heads up in general for the Timber and Working with Wood Show on this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Melbourne. But in particular, it's a heads up that Big Sky Timber will have a stand there, so it's actually worth going!!

Some of you are already aware, but for those that aren't, Pete McCurley (curly on here) and myself both now manage and operate a custom mill on the outskirts of Daylesford, Victoria for a company called Big Sky Timber. Some of you know this having purchased luthiery supplies from us directly.

Essentially our aim is to provide high quality Australian timbers to the woodwork market, in a range of species that are rare, hard to find and otherwise difficult to obtain. Particularly for very specific use such as our industry of Luthiery, but also instrument making more broadly such as woodwind and percussion. Of course, our timber is not limited to any one particular field and we supply many other forms of woodwork from carvers and turners to furniture makers and hackers

For those interested, we are an ethical timber source with the majority of our supply coming from salvage operations such as storm felled trees, farm burn piles, council removals etc. We also reclaim some timber and selectively harvest others. Being a small custom mill, we do not require bulk resource. We are able to process very select individual trees and maximise their recovery and use.

We will have a range of species available at the show this weekend, including some luthiery specific cut sets. But there are plenty of interesting pieces that although not specifically milled for instruments, would make for stand out rosette material, fretboards, headstock veneers, ukes etc, so if you happen to be going along, stop by and see us.

I snapped some photos of stock leaving today as a quick example - sorry, a dusty iPhone was all I had to do it with! But as a guide, species we will have on hand (some very limited) in various forms include :

Gidgee, Mulga, Doolalia, Weeping Myall, Supplejack, River Red Gum, Queensland Maple, Blackwood, Yarran, Desert Ash, Leopardwood, Elm, Blackheart Sassafras, Myrtle, Huon Pine, Beefwood, Californian Redwood, Silky Oak, Messmate, Belah, Boonaree, and more... Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Hope it all goes well Jeremy.

Unfortunately I'll be out of town this weekend so I'll miss it.

Regards
Bob, Geelong

Great to see this kind of activity, Jeremy and Pete!

So these rectangular, circular and guitar-shaped cut-offs in the pictures are the free samples you will hand out to the ANZLFers who will visit the show? If so I'll consider a quick trip to Melbourne this weekend!

Hey Jeremy,

Any chance of you and Curly dropping into me shed for a show and tell?? Bit of a drive but I'll make sure there's plenty of refreshments on ice :D

Great plan Kim. Lure Jeremy and Curly into your workshop and get 'em pissed. While they're off their faces nick outside and unload the wood from their trailer.
