New Guitar Day - Gosbell guitars Platypus 000

Post by slowlearner » Sat Oct 11, 2014 8:04 pm

I don't often get new guitars. I'm changing a few things around in my life at the mo and having sold a few basses, I was finally in the market for a decent acoustic. I say decent, because despite the amount of acoustic I've played in churches and schools over the years, the most expensive thing I've owned to date was $600... um yeah. You can call me a tightwad.

I wouldn't usually crow on here about a purchase, but given that it was made by a member here, I thought it was appropriate. I also wanted to tip my hat to him publicly, because he got me into building and has helped me out a heap.

So with my money in my pocket I rolled up to Mr Gosbell's house and had the chance to play three of his beautiful acoustics back to back. An 0, a 000 and a dreadnought. All three sported bearclaw spruce tops and blackwood back'n'sides. In truth, I've been lusting after the 0 for some time, but like my experience with resonators, I expected I'd end up choosing something else. I had the added privilege of playing two Gilets (000 and jumbo) only a few days before. That in itself was an experience. Turning up to Mr Gosbell's house and having the pick of the three was like the cherry on top.

I'd done some research and although my heart and eyes said '0', my ears and research all said, '000'. The other thing that needs to be said is that all three guitars were in the same league as the two Gilets in terms of sound and build quality. I personally think they sounded a little more open and louder than the Gilets, but that could come down to conditions and the like.

Needless to say, I feel pretty blessed to own this guitar. Sorry if the pictures don't do it justice...

Thank you Mr Gosbell. :cl

All I need to do now is put a pickup in it so I can plug it in at church. Any suggestions?

Hi Pete.

I've used LR Baggs Anthem system in mine. Absolutely beautiful.

Spent most of last night listening to PU systems and all I can say is now, I'm totally confused. Didn't really like the K&K from what I could tell. Anthem seemed OK but not a amazing. This is like buying doublebass PUs all over again. Everything seems like a compromise.

Congrats on your new purchase!

Getting a new guitar when you build your own is usually a rare event so it is always a special occasion and speaks volumes for the builder

I believe you are absolutely correct. What about a "pass-around" amongst us ANZLFers?
