Carbon Fiber Rods, Group Buy

Post by Allen » Mon May 19, 2008 5:58 pm

I'm going to be ordering some carbon fiber rods from Los Alamos Composites, as they have by far the best price on carbon fiber rods for the luthier trade. They have a discount price for 20+ rods. I'd be going for the 1/8" x 3/8" x 18" at $7.50 US each.

You can find their web site here http://www.jameswattsguitars.com/LAC.htm

Let me know if you're interested and give me some numbers.

OK Martin. I've got you down for 20. I'm assuming the 1/8 x 38 is what you'd want as well?

Got you guys on the list.

Alan, I've been using the 1/8 x 3/8 rods, and they seem to do the trick. I'd stick with them unless there is a design issue that you'd be dealing with that is different from the norm.

Got ya down. I'll wait for your sizes Sebastian.

I gave Los Alamos Composites a heads up on the order and they tell me that there shouldn't be a problem filling the order unless the numbers go through the roof. Then it might take a couple of weeks to fill.

I also inquired about shipping, and they replied that they will do their utmost to make the order go as one parcel so as to minimize shipping costs for us.

Got you down Dominic. I thought that I would let this run for the week so as to let everyone have a chance to see it and have a think about ordering. I will place the order on Sunday, so if anyone wants to change their order they will have until then.

I should add since we have a bunch of new faces since the last group buy how a group buy works.

I divide the shipping cost by the number of units that we order, then your cost is just for the number of units that you are getting, plus that portion of the shipping. I also do this with any bank charges that are applied to the exchange. You are also responsible for the postage from Cairns to your address. On previous group buys, there has been significant savings, so its a win if you are wanting to stock up on a product.

Hi Allen,

Make it six, 1/8 x 3/8. Thanks for organising this buy, much appreciated.

Are you guys using 1 per guitar or 2? Im thinking of a Mandocello and using 2 in the neck rather a truss rod. Comments?

I've used 2 rods in the necks I've installed them into. The two 000's had a truss rod and CF. The little size 5 just has 2 CF rods. I asked a few people that had built size 5's and they had just used an ebony strip with no adverse effects, so I figured that a couple of rods would more than do the trick on a 21" neck.

I've been using 1/4 x 3/8 x 18. Do you think their bulk discount will still apply if I get five in a group buy? I don't need that many. Five will last me till I'm fifty at the rate i'm going. Otherwise I suppose I can just get ten of the popular 1/8 x 3/8 rods and double them up.

I'm pretty sure that they will give us a discount on any size that we want to order as the number of rods has gone over 100 now. I will enquire and get back to you Matthew.

Hi Allen,

I know Hesh was able to take advantage of the order of Adi tops from Steve at Colonial, and I'm wondering if I can get in on this. Of course, I would have a second package shipped to me in the US, and I would be responsible for all of the shipping. I'd only want 10, so the savings are not huge, but it could probably cover the shipping. So as not to complicate your ANZLF order shipping to Australia, maybe I should just ask Jim Watts if I can piggy-back a separate order at the group buy rate? Again, not a huge savings for me for the few I need, so I can just back away if this complicates things.

Thanks,

Dennis

Marcia Watts got back to me right away and said that she will extend the group buy discount to you Dennis if you order within the next 2 weeks. She said that you can deal with them direct. I've given her your name so she'll be expecting a email from you.

The order has been placed with Los Alamos Composites, so the group buy is now closed. I'll post updates when I get them.
