Bridge Binding...

Post by nnickusa » Thu Jul 24, 2014 8:57 am

I haven't posted in a while, but I've not been idle. Well, I have, but that was work related. Anyway. I'm about to finish a 12-string I started for a mate 6 months ago.

I decided to address the idea that the bridge could be dressed up as much as any other aspect of the guitar, and decided to bind the bugger. Given my bridge shape, this proved a RPITA, but today will see it done and glued up.

I'm pretty happy with the result, or will be once it's cleaned up later today....

Hi Nick,

That looks great! I don't think I've ever seen a bridge bound before.

Thanks,
GregL.

I suspect we'll see this done a lot more often now! Such a simple idea, and a nice touch. I like!

Thanks guys. I was just looking at it, and realised that the fretboard is bound, so why not coordinate the "bling" a bit.

Hi Nick,

That looks nice! How would it look if you bound the end of the fretboard as well on the next one?

Thanks,
GregL.

It would look great! I've bound a few FB's a;l around and the result is pretty nice. Sadly, I had no intentions of making this one quite so decorated. It's for a mate, and while he's paying me, it's not much, but I like to explore new options on each guitar...so, the bridge is a freebee for Col....

Love it! Definitely an idea that could catch on. I also like your asymmetrical bridge shape.

Guess you could say, even as a collective none of us have seen the forest for the trees, Never ever seen it before Nick but like the others have said looks like it will probably catch on. Good stuff all round.

Cheers, again. Steve, I've got to believe I've seen it somewhere before,

End result, bar final sand down and polishing during set up....

Hi Nick, great idea and it looks real neat. I had a similar idea some time ago when a bridge I was designing worked out too thin so I glued some maple on the bottom and shaped the bridge down to it. I haven't used it yet, yours looks more classy.

I like it Taffy.

I had a similar event on one I made last year. I had a nice long FB, of figured Mulga, so I decided to book match a headstock veneer. So, I very carefully set up the band saw, sliced the offcut neatly as you like, sanded and joined it, and continued on my merry way....
Some time later, I went to retrieve the matching 13mm thick matching blank of Mulga mfor the bridge, and realised that I had, in fact, turned the really nice bridge blank into a really nice headstock veneer....

So, I revisited the offcut from the FB, and cut that sucker right down the middle, and then stuck a Maple spacer in it to get adequate height for the bridge. I quite liked the result....

Actually, that process sort of led me to explore this option....
