Get Well Soon Steve Roberts

Post by Tod Gilding » Mon Jul 07, 2014 1:40 pm

I thought I should let everyone know that one of our ANZLF Members had a workshop accident last week.

Steve Roberts was using a circular saw, and as he put it himself , he did something that he has been telling apprentices not do for 40 years. and managed to remove his right thumb.

Steve spent 3 days in hospital and has today had 40 stiches removed only 20 more to go.

As Steve is left handed he feels confident that he will still be able play his fine instruments.

Glad your feeling better Steve, and hope your back in the work shop soon.

cheers Tod

Shite

I think we all take news of a accident like this quite personally as it could easily be anyone of us. I certainly feel deep regret for the person involved.

I'm very sorry to hear the bad news Steve and I wish you the best and speediest recovery possibly.

Nasty business that,, hope Steve makes a good recovery. I've had a few close calls myself over the years, so far been lucky enough to get this far with all my bits still hanging on,
Get well soon Steve.

As already stated we've all had a close call or two over the years, I know I've had my share..But workshops aside, as a former motorcyclist I had attracted some rather serious road war injuries which needed to be overcome, and in some cases, adapted to...Pleased to say it seems that regardless of the individual, as a species us shaven apes are a resilient and adaptable lot. A bit of rehab and an investment of time and we seem to adapt to almost any physical challenge, and once on the other side of it all, then manage to continue on with becoming whom we will be.

Hope you make a really rapid recovery Steve, not nice when it happens mate but shit inevitably does.

Cheers

Kim

Oh no! I wish you a fast and good recovery Steve. I hope you'll soon be able to start using this thumb again in some way, little by little.

Wishing you a speedy and relatively pain-free recovery Steve!

Hi all,

Thanks for your concern and kind words.

Just to fill in the gaps, a couple of weeks ago I was ripping a piece of timber by hand with a small circular saw and did a stupid thing that was unworthy of any tradesman – and I have paid the price. The circular saw I was using kicked back and partially severed my right thumb. (The only good news is that I am left-handed.) The skilled surgeons and staff at Royal North Shore Hospital were able to repair the remains of my thumb and are pleased with the results and healing process so far.

Unfortunately, the severed section of my thumb (about a third) was unable to be found at the time of the accident so could not be re-attached, but the remaining stump and other gashes down the outside of my thumb have been expertly repaired. About 4 days afterwards, while cleaning my tools, I found the missing portion – but it was too late to do anything!

I am tentatively back in my shed looking longingly at a couple of projects on the bench. I hope to be back “at it” within a couple of months, or as soon as the Doctors say my thumb has healed enough.

I have always been extremely careful with power tools but this lapse in common sense has cost me dearly. As Nick said “COMPLACENCY IS THE MOTHER OF ALL F**K UPS! Just because you've been doing something for X number of years without incident doesn't mean to say it will never happen!”.

Thanks again for your kind wishes – I really appreciate them.

Steve
