For those who like to romance just a bit here's a couple of pics of a 16" Qld maple WRC oval hole X braced arch top.

Didn't you use a chainsaw Rod?? That's how I do mine
Ahhhhhhh You can't beat running your hands over a freshly carved back or top. Well there is one thing better (and equally as curvy) but can't mention that on a public forum! :D

Actually Martin i didn't use the chainsaw this time cos i got the chain jammed in a billet of Purple heart whilst cutting some binding strips, for this job i had to resort to tying back the guard on my nine and a quarter inch Makita framing saw, works really good as a carver! Don't take any notice of that pic with the Ibex planes, i don't really use them they;re just for show.

Beautiful work and nice pictures!

Those rigid Stradivari-Hutchins-Carruth scrapers are hard to beat, aren't they? :)

Showing off this kind of pictures is a double-edged sword though: on one side you increase desirability of traditionally handmade musical instruments while on the other hand other luthiers could get inspired and do the same, hence increasing the number on competing luthiers that do not only include a sounding box in their product's price!

Very nice Rod. How wide is the recurve? I've just started my first archtop and there's a few things i'm not sure about, recurve is one of them. This is the Lutz i got from Mario. Thanks.

Markus, i picked up that cedar at my local yard in Melbourne, Mathews timber , Rooks road Vermont, Wayne the deepest point of the recurve is set just inside, about 3-5mm the line of the linings or kerfing, looks like you're making good progress on your Lutz top, don't forget to final thickness the edge of your plates before you fit them to the sides, from the pic it looks like you are at that stage !
Cheers,

Rod.

Thanks for the reply Rod, i've just ordered a safe t plane and am waiting for that to do the sides. I've got the thickness at about 5/16" all over, should i remove more and get it a bit thinner now? Or is that done later? Thanks again Wayne

You need to finalise your tapered thicknessing before you close it up so from where you are now, when you get your Safe-T-Plane, thickness the perimeter in as far as your recurve area to about 4.5mm, that will leave a bit of a step in what your top is now, blend that into your arching, when you are happy with the exterior of your top you can finalise the thicknessing by removing material from the inside, use the same procedure for both plates, after the box is closed and binding is in, then work the recurve.
This is an example of the perimeter thicknessed and blended into the arching and the inside finished.
Cheers,,

thanks for the reply rod. i was over @ mathews a few weeks ago myself, and got some nice tight grained cedar too. but it was very streaky when re sawn and feels so bendy when compared to the spruce and sequoia that i used on my first two builds.not sure whether i should actually use it or not . in your experience or anyone else on the forum. does decent cedar generally feel this much different to spruce ?
thanks

Cedar definitely flexes more than spruce, I just compared the both this afternoon, now I know why the bracing for the top on my new build is pretty intense using curved bracing and carbon fibre.

Well Cedar has an elastic modulus around 75% of spruce (YMMV etc) so it should feel different, has to be used thicker.

Second bolt on neck for me, this one was a lot less traumatic although i couldn't decide which method to use so i used both the screw in insert and barrel nut methods, so i must be at least half right!! :D :D
