First attempt at making herringbone and wheat for rosettes

Post by Wayde Christie » Mon Feb 03, 2014 9:02 pm

Hey dudes,

I've been dreading this part of my latest build: a first attempt at making my own herringbone and wheat patterns for a custom rosette.

What I learned tonight while gluing up a dozen 30deg parallelograms of veneer, was that it's vital to add clamps and tighten them in the direction of the wedges. Made sense when I accidentally stumbled upon this fact *half way* through the gluing process :)

Next step is to square everything up, and then cut into several 3mm strips.

I'll add some more pics as I go if anyone is interested.

Cheers,

Wayde.

That's a lot of work Wayde, maybe i'm a bit slack, but i reckon there's enough messing around building a guitar without going to all that trouble, but that's just my opinion. Having said that i'd still like to see more photos because i do find it interesting ( when someone else is doing it ). Good luck. Wayne

It's a lot of work Wayne, but it's fun. For me it's all about the design tho. I don't wanna have the same rosette as you :)

Kudos to you Wayde for taking on what is a pain in the arse job. Me.....I buy my rosettes ready made and just bung 'em in....if I did my own finishing an instrument would take 2 years instead of 1.

First cut through the stack. Will add a couple of veneers before thick seeing with a hand plane.
