Router winge

Post by kiwigeo » Tue Jan 07, 2014 8:07 pm

So Ive got 4 routers in my workshop......two Hitachis, 2 Bosch and a Trend. Do ya think you'd be able to easily find a 5/8" template guide for one of the bldi ??? No way.

The template guides for both the Bosch and Hitachi machines are available from overseas. Ive got a set of guides for the Trend but the one guide I need is missing from the set.

Solution......buy a universal template guide base plate and a set of quality brass guides to go with same. The base plate can be switched between different machines.

Yep the brass guide set looks pretty good......alot better than the crappy stamped out guide that Bosch make for their routers. The mounting mechanism on the Bosch router is also a piece of crap. Luckily the rest of the router is of better design and construction....its a US made machine I got second hand a few years ago. It'll be set up as a dedicated machine to go with the LMI/Robbie ("Just a Skosh") OBrien neck jig Ive just finished assembling.

Its a Woolson style jig for cutting tenons and mortises. Its the LMI/Robbie Obrien model.

The Trend is a bit of a different kettle of fish from the Bosch and Hitachi machines...the latter are all hefty 1/2" jobs while the Trend (T5) only handles 6.5mm or 8mm collets...its more of an oversized laminate trimmer.

Frick!!!

Baseplate and brass guides arrived. Fitted the universal base plate to the router and screwed in a 5/8" guide and slapped a 1/2" straight cutter in the collet. Despite centering the baseplate using the centring guide when I run up the router the baseplate slips enough so the cutter hits the side of the guide.

There's bugger all clearance between the inside of the guide and the cutter but people are telling me I should have no problem even with such small clearances. Now waiting for the Bosch template guide to turn up from the UK.
