Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
Hi Martin and forum members - as pointed out, I am new to the forum. So a quick intro is called for.
I am an keen amateur builder with two guitars finished so far, one Steel String following John Kincaids book and another constructed under the tutelage of Gerard Gilet. The latter is a flamenco guitar, french polished with Cypress back and sides, spruce top and red cedar neck.
Having recently moved to a new house on Sydney's Northern Beaches I am at the "time to setup a workshop in the garage" phase.
I definitely lean more towards building than playing however I would like to improve my playing skills.

PS And now for the surname - its a bit of an odd one and can cause confusion when ordering take away or using full names on guitar forums . We Pickup's can all trace our roots to the Blackburn region in Lancashire.

Welcome Bill....Great to have more members on the good ship Anzlf...
As many have said before there are no stupid questions so dont be afraid to ask anything....there is a lot of generosity around here....
I am like you I am much more a builder than a player but I love to hear my instruments played well....
Cheers
John

G'day Bill
Welcome to the forum. I think we all aspire to making great guitars and wish we could play them like a pro.
A few can but I can't do either, nevertheless it is the journey that inspires us to keep on trying.
Have you had much experience with the french polishing? I have trouble getting a good finish.
I guess it is like playing the guitar, the secret is practice and more practice.

Hi All,
Did we reach a critical mass or did the Luddites succeed ?

Pretty sure this lead has gone cold...
Re: Guitar builder vises bought straight in from Taiwan.
I think so too Wayde, and who can blame Steve.
the Luddites, who never intended to buy any anyway , managed to make it all sound too hard.
Jeff Highland was quite correct , if the purchase price is less than $1000 then no duties or taxes are payable, if it's more than a $1000 then it's payable on the purchase price plus the freight.
Having said that, I have had a few items in excess of $1000 slip through with no duties or taxes to pay anyway.
oh well
Cheers,

I was looking around online the other day and found this: http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/index.ph ... cturer_id=
I'm going to grab me one of these. It's in Australia, in-stock and no hassle.

Jesus that the same as the one I bought in the US for $130 bucks. I knew I should have brought a couple back.

Shipping for those is close to $200 from the US. That's why I reckon it's worth getting one locally.Jeremy D wrote:Jesus that the same as the one I bought in the US for $130 bucks. I knew I should have brought a couple back.

The Stewmac vice is only $297.76 AUD shipped DHL 5-7 days. Isn't this a much better vice?
EDIT: P.S. That green one is exactly the same as mine. And while I use it and it is fairly good. There is no way I would drop 370 notes on it.

Yeah the DHL shipping is cheap but like the majority of the discussion in this thread, that doesn't include customs fees. This is what Stewmac says about DHL shipping:Jeremy D wrote:The Stewmac vice is only $297.76 AUD shipped DHL 5-7 days. Isn't this a much better vice?

So who knows how much you'd end up paying.our customers tell us that customs fees can add 50% or even more to the cost of their order
