Isn't GST assessed on value of goods PLUS freight?
Yes, but only when the value of the goods themselves exceeds $1000
So you could have $1000 Au of goods with $300 shipping and insurance and pay no Duty or GST

Get to $1001 and you pay duty if applicable then GST on value of (goods+duty+shipping and insurance)

Duty is determined on the Customs value of the goods. The Customs value of the goods is usually the amount you paid for your goods, converted to Australian currency. The exchange rate that is used is the rate applied on the day the goods were posted or exported.

GST is paid on the Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI).

The VoTI is the sum of:

the Customs value (Cval)
transport and insurance cost (or postage and insurance) (T&I)
any duty payable, plus
WET (if applicable).

The duty is applicable to the VALUE OF THE ITEMS (not inc postage). The TOTAL COST of items AND postage, determines if it it is stopped and requires paperwork (total = > $1000). Ive been billed for zero duty, but GST and paperwork costs, when the items were under $1000, but the total cost inc postage exceeded $1001.

If you read it correctly you will see that duty and Gst are only payable once the Customs value of the item itself exceeds $1000 AUD
This is defined as the amount you paid for the item, not the item plus shipping.
Then and only then is it applied to the total cost including shipping.

Of course if your supplier lists a value on the documentation which includes shipping costs then you are likely to be assessed on that basis

As of yesterday the Stewmac vise was A$157.64. Their quote on freight to Canberra by Postal Air was A$213.42 or by
DHL Express A$153.08. Steve's offer is still looking good. Thank you Steve.

Im not sure how you can get that, when the official ruling states:

GST is paid on the Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI).

The VoTI is the sum of:

the Customs value (Cval)
transport and insurance cost (or postage and insurance) (T&I)
any duty payable, plus

Perry,
That is certainly how GST is calculated on an import as I have said all along

There is however a difference on the threshhold at which duty and GST become payable

"Duty, GST and other taxes are calculated and payable when you make an import declaration for goods that have a value above A$1000"

Notice that this is "Goods" not "goods and services"

Except, Perry, that you stated

"The TOTAL COST of items AND postage, determines if it it is stopped and requires paperwork (total = > $1000"

This is a commonly held belief, but it is not supported by the written guidelines which only refer to the declared value of the goods being more than $1000

Postage is not "Goods" which is why duty is not charged on it but it is a service so if the goods value exceeds $1000 and charges are levied, then GST applies to the postage as well as to custom value and duties

I agree , to the nay sayers, Purchase it would seem is completely optional, if you don't feel it's a good deal, don't put your hand up for one.

The rest of us are big boy's, we can sort it out for ourselves.

Steve I'm still keen!.

Cheers,
Paul .

OK so the dock fees are gonna be about $300 approx. :? Customs fees $220 and $1004 for the vices. I'm gonna ask if they be shipped without th timber cheeks to get around fumigation/quarintine. I'm sure we can all make our own wooden cheeks.
So they're gonna be about $150 odd each.
So, is it worth it? Maybe I should order 20 instead. That will halve the fees and bring them down to $125 odd??
I'm pretty sure I could shift the lot eventually. And for that price I'd keep 5 for the shop :D
What say ye?
