Verity, the spice of life.

Post by Taffy Evans » Tue Nov 19, 2013 10:42 am

Seems a while since I posted something, I came across this pic [and others] in my “gonnapostoneday” file and thought I’d post it to start things off.

I was going use it in the current “how long does it take to build an acoustic” thread but I didn't want to hijack scuffle's topic.

I build my guitars pretty slow compared to what I hear and see about other builders. I prefer to leave each stage of building to sit for some time before carving braces or gluing components together.
I have always done this, so my customer’s custom instruments have a more distant delivery date. So far I have be lucky with that arrangement customer wise. Probably same hours spread over more months.

That doesn't mean a sit around waiting, I have five guitars on the go at the moment.

I think my style of building stemmed from, not only getting good results building this way, but due to the stop and start nature of fitting in the repair side of what I do with the building. Or should I say fitting in the building of instruments among the repairs that I do.

Anyway, the picture in question shows my repair shop one day last month with a variety of repair work on the go, part of it not all, that put a pause on building. I also got a request to repair a piano and an accordion, but ya gotta draw the line somewhere :)

Looks very busy.

One thing I learnt over the years, is space makes a huge difference.

The more space you have the less time is taken to set machines up or jigs up to do jobs. So jobs become quicker without having to do anything extra or working any faster.

I would love to have a building approx 1000 square meters.

Yep I hear what your saying Simso, that workshop in the photo has six benches in it and all the tools I need for repairs. The building shop has three benches and all the tools I need for building. There is a duplication of some tools to save me walking any distance to get what I want to use for any particular job. In the machine shop there are two benches and all the dust making machines and tools, many dedicated to a task.

If you saw the machine workshop, you would laugh, it's chock full, with little space between work stations. I only build stringed instruments so that's fine. I find that small work areas allow me to control the environment in more efficient and cost effective way.

When I've had more space I seem to get more crap to store in it. Mind you I'm very short on wall space and the ceilings looking a bit crowded too :D .
