New Zealand Guitarmaker In The Press

Post by ozziebluesman » Tue Apr 15, 2008 9:50 am

My friend and supurb guitarmaker Tony Francis from NZ posted this on another forum. Thought you may all like a look!!!

Not hard to tell from the clip Paddy Burgin is a fine craftsman, unique and humble. Watching the video i can almost smell all that beautiful wood in his workshop. The instruments played on the clip sound wonderful too. Someday I would like to have a yarn with him for a few hours and pick up a few lutherie tips.

Paddy Burgin has a job very few people have - he is a Lutherian, a guitar maker, only one of about a dozen in the country.
Bldi Kiwi Journalist.....Can't tell a Lutheran from a Luthier!!! :?

He did go on a guitar making course in Montana many years ago and he describes his construction techniques as 'old school'.
Nice to see Paddy getting some publicity.

I did one of Paddy and Dave Freeman's guitar building courses in Wellington NZ a few years back and we got to go up to his house and check out his workshop. During the course you get to build a steel string or a classical using the Spanish Method. The building technique seems to follow that used in Jim William's book. I managed to knock up a half decent OM which is now being played by a musician friend along with my first build classical.

Cheers Martin

Alan,

Thanks for posting that - Paddy's a mighty builer with a great reputation ell deserved. It's nice to see Paddy's double-necked Weiss again that inspired me to make Orthus.
