Alaskan Yellow Cedar Spots

Post by TimS » Mon Sep 02, 2013 11:01 pm

Any thoughts about this?

After applying MinWax (wipe on Polyurethane) spots appeared on the surface of the soundboard. I can only conclude that there might be localised areas of cedar oil, a reaction with the MinWax or some form of fungal activity. There wasn't any overspray or foreign material in the facinity that I was aware of.

Don't know what causes it Tim, but I've seen it plenty of times on items people had built with Yellow Cedar back in Canada. My Grandfather's sail boat galley had the exact same look after we varnished it.

Thanks Allen. I must check my other sets for evidence of the spots. Perhaps a solvent or a light bleach might minimise the effect.

Have you tried any finishes other than MinWax, Tim which display similar defects?
