Countersinking Bridge Pin Holes

Post by Kim Strode » Fri Aug 09, 2013 6:47 pm

I am about to countersink my bridge pin holes.

I generally use this bit to achieve my general countersinking work, but find the countersink is off centre with the actual drilled hole. Can anyone offer advice as to how to achieve both the countersink and drilled hole to be centred? Also is this the best drill bit for this purpose, or can someone recommend a better tool? I've seen a countersink bit on the Stewmac Website, but don't know it's worth the cost?

Thanks

Use the countersink bit first.

Apologies, half asleep and forgot the rest of the post Kim. Also use a nice, sharp fine centre punch and clamp the work securely to the bench.

... or get a countersink with a hole through the middle for the drill bit and do both in one go. For holes already drilled, just replace the drill bit with a blank to act as a centring tool.

Such as one of these -

or these -

in whatever size you require.

Kim

I have the Stewmac countersink bit. It's a great, foolproof piece of kit and definitely worth what they charge for it.

Like Bob, I use the StewMac counter sink. It's a fool proof method every time.

Me three with the counter sink bit and it was one of the first specialty tools I bought in 2007.
Very good.

I use a round end carbide burr. It's a hell of a lot more controllable than a plain old counter sink. I didn't know about that bit of stew-mac kit. Not that expensive for what you get.

So I too had not noticed the Stew-Mac kit before... Looks good and reports evidently are too.

It is pretty much exactly what I mentioned and linked above - a four flute countersink, with a steel blank for centring already inserted and with a depth stop collar. If you want one pre-made, there it is. Pretty easy to do yourself nevertheless and cheaper, should you not be placing an order to Stewmac in the near future.

Stop collars to suit the countersinks I linked above -

Hope it helps.

I really like the finish that a "cross-hole" countersink gives. My experience is they give a smoother result than fluted bits but the Stewmac job does look interesting.
