Some interesting numbers in that article.

100 "handmade" guitars per week, therefore ~5000 per year.
Profit of $35.9 million in 2011.
Profit per guitar: $7180.

Meanwhile in the real world, typical street price of CC guitar: call it a generous $2000.
Maximum retail revenue $10 million
Max income to CC probably ~$5 million.
Full cost of 30 employees ~$2 million
That leaves (on a very generous analysis) ~$3 million to pay for wood, hardware, strings, machinery, power, rent etc. etc.

Drop the sales price or the number sold to get a feel for the sensitivity.

Must have had Wayne Swan doing the accounts.

I like the term "Handmade" used in the piece. After visiting their site I came away with the distinct impression that CNC was used quite intensively in the process thereby rendering them "hand assembled" at best.

I read Cole Clark themselves disputed that $35 million profit figure... call it shoddy journalism more than anything else I think.

Yeah the back factory at Cole Clarke burnt .
One of the 5 axis cnc's lost , the spray room , set up room , all timber stocks and a heap of jigs and fixtures . Bloody sad really . What I would say is that for all the criticisms of the big two they are still managing to produce instruments in Australia in a bloody difficult economic environment , hats off to that .

Understandable. If they hadn't they'd get taxed accordingly...

Got another one in today with a loose "Face Brace Sensor"
This one was pristine with no signs of abuse but the aluminium brace was flapping in the breeze
Advised the guy to send it back to the factory for repair.
