I agree Martin, seems a bit over priced to me if it is backsawn IRW and it does not stop there as the vendor has some darker stuff (more like IRW in colour)at, up to $250 a set, It has a specky look though. I have some Dalbergia latifolia (Identified by a botanist) from the local Botanic Gardens and it is very similar to this vendors light stuff.

A bit of luck Nick and he might spot the thread.

 Well considering Indonesian labour rates, if he is selling then he is living the dream.

Shame he is sawing it for pattern as some of the more quarter sawn sides look pretty good too. I did consider offering $50 a set but then saw that postage was $60 and it is only across the creek from me.

I think the trees are young and logs are generally so small that flat sawing is the only way to get decent sized pieces of wood out of them.

Ive personally seen a lot of this rw while living over there. Every piece i seen that was marketed as guitar wood was flat sawn. Trees are young and small.

Honestly, I would not use this wood no matter what the price. It would not doubt be eye catching when finished but not sure how reliable in terms of movement and cracking. Sound and reliability come out ahead of looks as far as I am concerned. Looks are a nice added bonus if you first have the sound and reliability. To much work goes into guitar construction to take unnecessary risks. Just my opinion of course.

I bought a mando set of this bloke a few years ago when he was advertising it as Brazilian Rosewood. I believe Tippie and Steve Roberson did the same just to see!!!!

He trades under a variety of names.

Steve had it tested by a mate of his at the Uni of North Carolina and it came up as D Latifolia.

Anyway that's another story.

They grow this stuff in Indonesia as wind breaks for coffee plantations so it is well fertilized, doesn't have to compete for light like the forest grown stuff and as a consequence grows really quickly.

It is not particularly dense or stiff, is light in colour and not particularly attractive when seen in the flesh. It certainly is nothing like good, straight grained, purple, dark, forest grown Indian Rosewood.

Wouldn't bother with it at all.

Regards
Bob, Geelong

Interesting bit of poetic license too "It can be said that maybe it is a kind of Brazilian Rosewood."

The blurb also seems to be trying to dissuade people from thinking it is sonokeling IRW by saying the seeds and flowers are like no other rosewood.

I don't think this is correct. The stuff I buy in mainly from the US is the real stuff.....much tighter grain and cut on the quarter.

That wood would be too unstable to build with. Did it once won't do it again.

Think I would have risked getting my testicles removed with a blunt cabinet scraper if I had Tod, as you may know, that particular supplier is not everybody's favourite around these parts.

Well you learn something new every day. Sonokeling (D. Latifolia or D.Sisso) are natives in Indonesia. Also D. Latifolia was first plantationed on Java in 1873.

It would seem that this particular vendor is selling the D.Latifolia from the tea and coffee plantation wind breaks which from the opinions of those who have tried it make it next to useless for our purpose but this would not rule out other sources of this wood to be useful for backs and sides. As Bob said the windbreaks are subjected to a fertilising regime but it would seem that not all Sonokeling is grown at such a fast rate.

It would be nice to think that something with those colours is out there in the form of some of the old growth or early plantations.

It looks like you may be right Dave, there is a Dutch company that claims to be the largest supplier of D.Latifola to the world market getting its wood from Indonesia and it stands to reason given that India will only export it as a finished product where Indonesia will export it as a board.
