Long Guitar strings

Post by rocket » Mon Jan 28, 2013 12:09 pm

With my next build!!! yes,, another archtop, i want to do way with the usual tailpiece be it a trapeze or carved ebony, i want to extend the strings right down to the tail, i have a design in my head as to the hardware i'll make or have made for me to attach the strings there, i'm stealing this idea off Christoph Grellier, my problem is i can't find guitar strings to suit this purpose, made numerous enquiries to suppliers and also Grellier himself," well they say that imitation is the best form compliment don't they?" but no reply,, Does anybody have any clue where i can look for long scale guitar strings? the D and G are my main concern, D'darios measure, 1020mm, i need in excess of 1040,, for the D and G

Check out Erich Solomon's archtops .... he uses a tailpiece that basically doesn't turn the corner over the guitar's top. When I contacted him once re giving his design a try, he gave me this heads up...
Due to the length of available strings this only works on smaller bodies! I use it on my 16" guitars but the length of my body is only 18.75 inches.... ....The gentleman who ordered my first baritone insisted on the minimalist tailpiece and we had to order extra long strings .... It was a pain but it did work

Newtone Strings will make custom lengths for you, but you'll have to order a minimum of 6 sets. Not sure if they'll just make individual strings or if it has to be complete sets. I think I ended up with 6 sets of strings 46" long.
