I don't know what most of you do, but when installing a nut i just put two tiny dobs of titebond inthe slot just to ensure no sideways movement and they usually pop out quite easily given a little tap with a soft face fret hammer. Now i have a foreigner on the bench for numerous items to be attended to, one of which is a set up and i've noticed that when any string is fretted at 2 we have no action at1 at all, in my opinion the nut slots are too deep . Now i've given the nut a bit of a nudge but it does feel very secure, is there any light to be shed on this matter as far as do's and don'ts?
The instrument is a 1992 Crickmore
Rod.

Re: Nut removal
I generally do it with a block of wood and a hammer tapping from the fretboard side (or across the neck for Fender style nuts)
You do have to be careful not to damage the headstock veneer, don't ask how I know.
Frank Ford does a small cut behind the nut to avoid headplate damage

If it doesn't come out with a small tap, It may have been fully glued and you may need to destroy the nut to get it out,

Re: Nut removal
I'll generaly use a block of wood that covers the entire inner face of the nut and giving that a decent wrap on the tough ones. One thing to wach for is that you score any finish that kay be binding the nut with a razor. If you dont then it could chip the finish when the nut breaks lose.

Re: Nut removal
We use a hammer and block of wood, if it doesn't break free with a few taps, then you have to cut down through the centre of the nut and break it,

+1, you are going to make a new nut so no use trying to save the old one.simso wrote:We use a hammer and block of wood, if it doesn't break free with a few taps, then you have to cut down through the centre of the nut and break it,
You could also play a little gentle heat on the nut first to soften the glue (unless it's been glued in with CA
