Celluloid binding

Post by MBP » Thu Aug 09, 2012 10:01 pm

Hi All,

Is it possible to dye/stain celluloid or ivoroid binding. I am after some dark coloured stuff but the guy I deal with doesn't have them in the size I want.

I don't have any laying around to try.

Thanks,

As far as I know, no. I would suspect anything which might stain celluloid would also dissolve it. Celluloid gets made with the colours in it, and while you can soften it and reshape to some extent, there is not much else you can do with it. Mandolin and arch top makers who do sunburst finishes routinely spray/wipe stain over the celluloid binding and then just scrape it off.

cheers
