Guess or identify

Post by charangohabsburg » Mon Jul 23, 2012 6:29 am

Identifying wood sometimes can be difficult or even impossible (depending on how close we want to get), but it also can be relatively easy when we have some information about it, like knowing where the wood comes from, smelling it, looking from any angle and distance at it, etc. Trying to identify wood by only looking at a picture, without having further information can be a challenge. If you like challenges... what wood do you think could be this?

Looks like a patch of illegally imported tiger skin!
*I suck at these identifying type of things*
The colouring looks like it could from the Maple family with some sort of Spalting but then the slightly opaque flecks through it would tell me not. I have some Silk tree (Albizia Julibrissin) that also has a similar colouration to this, could be that.
Did I tell you I suck at this game?

Yes I agree, and its even harder if you rely on the color in a photo. The recent guitar I called 'Tommy' was photographed 3-4 times and it was so hard to get the color my eyes were seeing.

I have some poplar veneer that looks something like that, although with a bit of green in it.

First of all I have to admit that I am totally lost when asked to "identify" a wood I am not familiar with just by a picture!

Thanks to all for your guesses!

For you relief, this was not a contest or dirty trick, but I wanted (and got) a totally different answer to a question I did not ask explicitly. Of course I could have asked directly, but in that case I would never have gotten an answer that would have been useful to me. This question would have been something like "can you easily see that this is not a normal sized guitar back?" Of course you had looked hard at it and would have said that of course you can see that if you have a more or less close look at it. I think Nick got very close with his observations and conclusions!

So, here is the picture again (with the for me more relevant part of the solution):

If you want to know the wood species, here some of you have already seen the wood sample and the log it was cut from (the second, fourth plus the last picture).

Thanks again for all your suggestions, I'll work hard on making some money on Martin's vision!

Cheers,
Markus
